is one of the first eight Associate Degree Programs in the United States. It was the last to be accepted as a participant
in the Cooperative Research Project in Junior and Community College Education for Nursing sponsored by the Division of Nursing in Education
at Teachers College, Columbia University. The principal investigator was Dr. Mildred Montag. The Cooperative Research Project, launched
in 1952, was implemented at a time when there was a shortage of nurses and a need to prepare nurses in a shorter period than the traditional
programs. It was designed to be implemented by junior colleges. NSU, known then as the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College, was
selected in 1955. As a historically black college or university (HBCU) its inclusion increased diversity of the |
| participants in the project. The acceptance of NSU's participation in the project was due in part to the determination, persistence, and influence of Dr. Brown,
Dr. Lyman B. Brooks (former President of NSU), and Dr. Hazle Blakeney
(former department chair). With support from the Norfolk
Community Hospital (the hospital that served the black population of Norfolk, VA in 1955), and approval of the Virginia Board of Nurse
Examiners, NSU was included in the project. Thus, in 1955, NSU became the first HBCU in the United States to have an Associate Degree Nursing Program. Our Nursing program has since expanded to inlclude several programs leading to the Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Since its
inception, the Department of Nursing has graduated more than 2,000 persons who have become registered nurses. Of the students who have
graduated from the Associate Degree Program, approximately 25% have returned to earn a Bachelor of Science degree. Additionally, many of our
nursing alumni have earned Master and Doctorate Degrees in nursing, related disciplines and other fields of study.
