COURSE DESCRIPTION
Introduces general concepts of health and nursing and their applicability to clients of all ages located on the wellness portion of the wellness-illness continuum. Focuses on stages of development and maturation and the cultural influence on all age groups as a means of understanding how individuals meet their basic needs. The nursing process is introduced. Development of basic skills of nursing assistance to individuals striving to maintain relative states of health as they perform their activities of daily living. (4 hours lecture / 9 hours laboratory)

COURSE RATIONALE
  1. This course is designed to assist the student in developing a basic knowledge and understanding of the scope and function of nursing practice and the meaning of nursing as a science. The student is taught basic skills necessary to assess the level of wellness of an individual and to assist the individual to maintain a healthy state.
  2. The skills of therapeutic communication, observation, development of interpersonal relations and physical assessment techniques are introduced as a means of identifying man’s basic needs according to Maslow. The nursing process is introduced in this course and forms the foundation for all nursing activities.
  3. Theories related to psychological and physiological homeostasis will be introduced in this course. Eriksons Eight Ages of Man form the basis for developmental assessment. Principles from the areas of nutrition, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, sociology, and psychology are introduced, threaded and reinforced throughout the course.
  4. Dorothea Orems Self-Care Deficit Theory is introduced and applied in the didactic and clinical setting. The student will utilize this framework throughout the nursing program to evaluate the basic human needs that must be met to maintain a healthy state of the individual.
 
COURSE GOALS AND INTENDED OUTCOMES
Main Objective:
By the completion of this course the student will be able to:
  1. Perform basic nursing interventions without hazard to self or others;
  2. Use the nursing process to assist an individual with selected deficits in meeting universal self-care requisites;
  3. Assess individuals throughout the lifespan, using developmental and maturational theories;
  4. Apply Maslow’s hierarchy of needs in setting priorities for nursing care of selected individuals;
  5. Incorporate effective communication skills when setting priorities for nursing care of selected individuals;
  6. Identify ethical and legal concepts that form the foundation of accountability in nursing practice;
  7. Use feedback and constructive criticism to promote personal and professional growth;
  8. Define the role of the nurse as an independent and interdependent member of the health team;
  9. Develop an understanding of the university with regard to organizational structure, policies, and procedures;
  10. Develop skills and competencies required for careers with regards to trends, value clarification, skills, and techniques necessary for career assessment;
  11. Apply study strategies and survival skills to academic and social situations on the campus and in the community;
  12. Recognize diversity to develop an understanding and tolerance for diversity and to effectively deal with diversity on campus and in the community;
  13. Apply critical thinking and problem-solving to everyday situations encountered.

Measureable Objectives:
The student will:
  1. Complete an entrance assessment examination;
  2. Complete reading assignments as noted in unit outlines;
  3. View required audio-visuals and electronic resources as noted in unit outlines;
  4. Using the Developmental Observational Guide Form, observe a child in a nursery school or child development center and complete the Developmental Assessment;
  5. Observe an elderly person in an adult day care or nursing home setting and complete the Assessment Guide for Person in Later Maturity as directed by the instructor;
  6. Participate in small group sessions using verbal and nonverbal communication techniques;
  7. Document selected portions of verbal interactions with a fellow student and/or assigned clients using the NSU process recording format as directed by the instructor;
  8. Using the Nursing History Form & a Nursing Care Plan Form, utilize interview techniques on a selected client in the clinical laboratory to complete a Nursing Process Paper;
  9. Submit nursing care plan(s) weekly on selected clients from the clinical laboratory;
  10. Using the Diet History Form, complete a Nutritional Assessment on a selected client from the clinical laboratory;
  11. Complete a Health Teaching Plan on a selected client from the clinical laboratory as directed by the instructor;
  12. Fully participate in on-campus laboratories by completing assigned readings, electronic learning experiences, and audio-visual assignments prior to campus laboratory and practicing skills according to specified criteria;
  13. Complete the Learning System-RN (LS-RN) computer assignments;
  14. Participate in Freshmen Nursing Enhancement Drill (FRESH-NED).

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY STANDARDS
  1. Each student is responsible for the materials contained in this course syllabus and the Department of Nursing Student Handbook.
  2. Prior to the first class session, each student is responsible for submitting and maintaining evidence of current:
    1. CPR Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
    2. Malpractice Insurance: $2 million / $4 million
    3. Health Record including documentation of required immunizations and/or titers
    4. Criminal Background Investigation
  3. Honor Code All students are expected to maintain high ethical and moral standards. A very important component of this is the Honor Code. All students are expected to support the following statement in all course work.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
Students are expected to have a working knowledge of basic keyboarding, word processing, & navigating the internet. Students are encouraged to ask for assistance in these areas if needed.
 
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  1. Attendance is taken during each class session. It is the students responsibility to be present. Each student is expected to attend each class and lab (on-campus and off-campus) session and to be punctual. The hours for clinical laboratory will vary and include both day and evening shifts. Students are expected to attend all scheduled classroom and clinical experiences. Absences will impede the students ability to successfully meet clinical objectives. Clinical laboratory make-ups, if any, due to student absence will be conducted at the discretion of the instructor.
  2. Students are expected to come to class and lab prepared to fully engage the learning environment. Students are not expected to interfere with the learning process and the exchange of ideas and information despite personal disagreement, but rather to identify misinformation and unclear thinking by requesting clarification appropriately and participating in the discussion. Further all students are expected to stay within the topic and objectives for class discussion and clinical experience and to respond to other fellow students ideas as well as the instructors. Cell phones and electronic devices are to be turned off during class.
  3. Each student is expected to complete all available learning experiences and activities such as reading assignments, study questions, critical-thinking exercises, self-study modules, electronic learning resources, and clinical preparation forms prior to class and/or lab.
  4. In accordance with University policy, Not more than 20% of class meetings (excused and/or unexcused) may be missed by a student during a given semester. At the discretion of the instructor, a student whose absences exceeds 20% of scheduled class meetings for the semester may receive a grade of F for the course (Norfolk State University Catalog, 2002-2004, p. 25)

 
SCHOOL WIDE TUTORING SERVICES STATEMENT
The College of Science, Engineering & Technology (CSET) provides tutoring services through the STARS Tutoring Center for those NSU students who may be experiencing difficulties in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Nursing, Technology and Physics courses. The STARS office is located in Suite 100, RTC. This service is free of charge and provided to NSU students only. UNIVERSITY ASSESSMENT STATEMENT
