COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is an introduction to basic direct current circuits. Topics include: voltage, current, resistance, Ohms Law, energy, and power. Series, parallel, series parallel circuits, voltage dividers, current dividers, DC circuit analysis, network theorems and electromagnetic applications including inductors and capacitors are also covered.

    COURSE RATIONALE
    THe course rationale communicates to students and faculty the location of the course in the curriculum. ELT-111 is a required program core course which introduces Direct Current Fundamentals. This course along with ELT-212 and ELT-212L provides the student with a good grounding in electrical circuit analysis. The mathematical rigor of this course has been designed to coincide with a standard course in algegra.
     
    COURSE GOALS AND INTENDED OUTCOMES
    Main Objective:

    • Explain the basic units of the SI system.
    • Recognize and use the IEEE and IEC schematic symbols for electrical circuits.
    • Explain the meaning of voltage and its unit of measure, the Volt.
    • Explain the meaning of current and its unit of measure, the Ampere.
    • Explain the meaning of resistance and its unit of measure, the OHM.
    • Give an example of linear and non-linear resistance.
    • Discuss the properties of electrical wire.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in using wire tables.
    • Explain the meaning of power and its unit of measure, the Watt.
    • Explain the meaning of electrical energy and its unit of measure, the Joule.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in solving DC circuits for Voltage, current, resistance, power, and energy.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in utilizing determinants to solve multiple loop circuits involving simultaneous equations.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in utilizing determinants to solve multiple node circuits involving simultaneous equations.
    • Understand electrical control devices such as various types of switches, circuit protection devices and relays.
    • Explain the property and unit of capacitance.
    • Explain the property unit for inductance.
    • Demonstrate ability to solve problems involving transient analysis in circuits containing resistance and capacitance and or inductance.
    • Explain operation of a Wheatstone bridge and solve problems involving the Wheatsone bridge.
    • Discuss the various units of electromagnetism.
    • Understand electromagnetic circuits.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in solving problems using various network theorems.
    • Explain the concept of e of and perform calculations with electrical power and energy.
    • Explain maximum power transfer theorem and perform appropriate calculations.
    • Explain basic electromechanical devices and perform appropriate calculations.

    Students must complete this course with an average of "C" or better to successfully pass this course. "C-" constitutes a failing grade. Using the cumulative average of these components, grades will be assigned using the following grading scale:

    A=95% and above
    B=85 - 94%
    C=75 - 84%
    D=65 - 74%
    F=73 and below (including students who stop coming to class without officially withdrawing from the university or miss 20% of the class meetings)
    W=Students must withdraw according to the procedure outlined in the current course catalog or student handbook to receive a "W" grade.
  • Extra credit may be available at the sole discretion of the instructor.
  • The student is expected to maintain a Blackboard account and to insure that they can check daily for class announcements. It is the responsibility of the student to inform the instructor if they can't log onto Blackboard.
  • Homework will typicaly be assigned at the end of each meeting and will be due at the following meeting unless otherwise specified. Unexcused late homework will not be accepted.
  • The student should be prepared for impromptu quizzes at the beginning of every class meeting. There is no provision to make-up missed quizzes.
  • A large amount of handout material is provided. The instructor cannot be responsible to provide copies to students who are not in attendance.
  • The student may be expected to complete lab exercises outside of class time.
  • Students who are absent for more than 20% of class meetings will not receive a passing grade in this course.
  • Continuous tardiness will no be tolerated and can affect grades negatively.
  • Late assignments will not be accepted except for excused absences.
  • Make-up examinations will only be permitted for prior excused absences.
  • Tutoring for students who have made an appropriate independent effort and have specific questions will be available by the instructor through the STARS office.
  • An incomplete grade will only be permitted under extreme extenuating circumstances at the discretion of the instructor.
  • Students who have missed 20% of the classes shall receive an "F" grade at the instructor's discretion.
    The instructor reserves the right to revise the grading criteria as appropriate and will make reasonable attempts to notify students

    ACADEMIC INTEGRITY STANDARDS
    • Students are expected to attend all scheduled class meetings
    • Students are expected to come to class on time
    • Students are expected to participate in class discussions and demonstrations.

    • Use of cell phones and other electronic devices is not permitted in class. Students are to adhere to University policy concerning a code of conduct during all class meetings.
