Biology graduates include Ph.D. scientists who are employed as educators and researchers in the public and private sectors throughout the nation. The Department's pre-professional program contributes a significant number of major health care providers (physicians, dentists, podiatrists, veterinarians, and pharmacists) to that critical pool of health professionals.

A significant number of biology students have:

  • Been awarded four year scholarships through the Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics in Applied Sciences (DNIMAS).
  • Gained research experiences with principal investigators within the department
  • Participated in research projects through summer programs offered at major universities nationwide
  • Participated in the DNIMAS Norfolk State University/Eastern Virginia Medical School Joint Program in Medicine
  • Earned credits for the Biotechnology Certificate (in addition to their bachelor's degree)

Biology students participate in the activities of:

  • The Biology Society
  • The Pre-Med Society
  • The University's Parsons Honors Program
  • The Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Society

Members of the departmental faculty hold Ph.D. degrees in specialized areas such as:

  • Bacteriology
  • Embryology
  • Genetics
  • Molecular biology
  • Cell biology
  • Microbiology
  • Parasitology
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Botany

Biology majors are provided with:

  • Individual faculty advisors for curriculum and course choices, scheduling, and career opportunities
  • Specialized advising for health science careers
  • Access to a variety of study and tutorial resources
